idealism - realism = cynicism

sometimes i don't even know what i'm saying...
i often contradict myself
To see a World in a grain of sand,
And a Heaven in a wild flower,
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand,
And Eternity in an hour.

@ the zoo

went to the zoo yesterday with fi and maz. haven't been there for some years and was actually quite excited. as free tickets were given out to workers of all nationalities as part of the may day celebrations, there were quite a huge number of foreign workers there. and at some points, it felt like we were tourists in some foreign land (note: i'm not racist, but just telling it exactly what it was like).

as fi said, we really got to give a star award to the white tigers. like supermodels, the trio really knew how to ham it up for the cameras, with their feline poses and graceful strutting on the 'catwalk'. whether it's a lazy bask in the sun or a cooling swim in the water, these beautiful divas charmed the crowd.

another delight was the polar bears, Inuka and his mum Sheba. initially, we couldn't really see them through the foggy glass as they lounged in their backyard. but when the token feeding for the morning started, they started to dive into the pool and came up closer. it was cute to see Sheba waving at us and even cuter to see the kids waving excitedly back at her. but then you wonder, if she's waving at the unseen keeper who's providing her with her daily sustenance cos she's hungry or she's been trained to do such tricks as entertainment, etc... Inuka also did his part with his laps round the pool, his huge form a stark contrast to the tiny tots who had gathered in front to get a closer glimpse of the big fellow.

after the feeding, we lingered round a while longer, with me trying to get some nice shots (unsuccessfully). before we left, we each took a shot of us measuring our heights to that of a full grown polar bear, although fi need a bit more cajoling (since she stood only half as tall as the polar bear). hee.

on our way for the giraffe feeding, as recommeded by pong, we said hi to the rhinos, deers, ostriches and cheetahs. maz was so enamored by the rhinos, she kissed the arse of one! we got to admire the elegant, long necks and gentle eyes of the giraffes up close (and almost personal) as they came near into the hut for some treats from the keeper. and i took a shot with the zebras in my black & white outfit, but too bad, i didn't have my stripy specs with me.

we continued our stroll for more animal encounters before heading into the kfc at the children's world to fill our tummies. by then, the sky didn't look too friendly. as we proceed on to the animal land within the children's world, we were threatened with little rain droplets. at least we managed to 'bah' at the goats and sheeps before the keeper sent them back to the safety of their shelter. among the sheeps was a little 3mths old brownish baby 'sheep'. when i commented to maz that the baby sheep seems very brown, the keeper overheard and said 'she thinks she's a sheep"! oh my! it's actually a baby goat with an identity crisis. that really cracked us up.

as the rain got heavier, we were forced to seek shelter with crying babies and watched the rain drops pounding furiously on the ground. it seemed like an endless wait. when it finally seemed like the rain was stopping, we braved the drizzle and continued on our exploration of the zoo. unfortunately, we couldn't get to see the penjuins and sealions as their home was undergoing some upgrading. yes, even animals get to participate in the upgrading programme though as permanent residents, their votes do not count in the election.

so, we moved on to pay a visit to the largest animal on land. have you ever seen a dancing elephant? well, i think we definitely saw one who was happily swaying side to side. again, maz paid homage to the elephants with her arse-kissing while the huge mammals totally ignored our presence and indulged in their own activities. and it's amazing how with just a single, hardly visible line as a boundary marker, the keepers are able to keep these giants beings from straying out of their designated play areas.

and why do the fishes like to 'kiss' the pygmy hippo so much? a mystery unsolved for us. but i suppose their antics were an inspiration for our dear maz who decided to pucker up for some love with an iguana (i think it is an iguana).

do not miss the feeding of the family of otters! with slinky fur and pitchy squeals, the way they scurried for food was just adorable. i had fun snapping away at their acrobatics.

just before leaving the zoo, we browsed through the gift shop. ooohhh... the toys are so cute!!! would love to buy them but $$!!! aiya.

well, there you have it, an account of our zoo visit. =)
